History. The Rapid went on sale in November 2012, with buyers able to choose between 74bhp 1.2, 85bhp 1.2 TSI and 120bhp 1.4 TSI petrol engines, plus a 103bhp 1.6 TDI diesel.
The 1.4 TSI is surprisingly strong, pulling car and caravan from 30-60mph in just 13 seconds. The Spaceback also coped well enough with the hill start so long as the handbrake was pulled on firmly, and also proved reasonably stable in a straight line unless a strong crosswind was blowing. However, it was wrong-footed by the lane-change test.
They have the same engines, interior and basic design. In fact only the headlights and grille are different. The Rapid was more popular though and so there are more used examples about. To slightly confuse things there’s also the Skoda Rapid Spaceback which is a more conventional hatchback but offers the same lots-of-space-in-a-small-package
